Have you noticed your Mac becoming slightly sluggish? Is the boot time not as quick as it used to be? The reason for this is usually an accumulation of junk files. Clearing junk files out of a Mac is a necessary step to save space and improve performance. There are a ton of cleaner apps out there and CleanMyMac X by MacPaw is one of the most popular ones. MacPaw claims that this is the best cleanup app for macOS. Is the claim true? Is it worth your hard-earned money? We’ll answer those questions and more in this article.
We are going to do a CleanMyMac X review based on the factors that make a good cleaner – the user interface, features, and performance.
Ready? Let’s get started.
CleanMyMac X Review (2020)
Whenever you run an app, the first thing you are going to notice is the user interface. Fortunately, CleanMyMac X is extremely easy on the eyes and it’s also pretty intuitive. The magenta shades are a good choice and every feature is available with a single click.
All of the features are neatly organized on the left side under five headers. This makes it easy and accessible to everyone. Clicking on an option will open it up on the right side. Scanning files and clearing junk files can bve done with a couple of clicks.
CleanMyMac X – Features
As far as features are concerned CleanMyMac X is chock full of them. We are going to take a look at the performance of these features in the next section.
There are several cleanup features within CleanMyMac X. Smart Scan can find caches, broken files, iOS photo cache, and development junk with a single click. It will determine the files that are “safe” meaning that they are unimportant and can be deleted. This program can also find unused and large files for you. It will let you review these large files before deleting them. You can also clear up mail junk files with a single click.
The included uninstaller will delete an app and all of its associated files. It also has a shredder feature, that will completely shred any traces of a file after you delete them. You can also empty the trash bins of apps.
CleanMyMac X has an optimization feature that aims to squeeze every drop of performance out of your system. Spotlight reindexing and repairing disk permissions are neat features to have. This cleaner will also run maintenance scripts to make sure everything runs smoothly. You can also easily update individual apps with the Updater.
The System Dashboard will give you all of the information about your system (like available memory) and CPU and battery health.
CleanMyMac X also comes with a malware scanner. It aims to clear up all of the suspicious files and applications while the Privacy feature aims to help you out online.
CleanMyMac X – Performance
All of these features would mean nothing if the app did not perform well. Fortunately, CleanMyMac X does a tremendous job of cleaning junk files from your system.
The smart scan feature does a great job of identifying unnecessary files and marking them for deletion. It can safely clean up tens of GBs worth of storage and it does it quicker than other cleaner apps. The uninstaller will remove all of the files left by an uninstalled app. Unfortunately, there is no duplicate file finder.
The file scanner will report large files that were unused for a long time. Clearing up these files can save you hundreds of GBs of storage, but I recommend that you review these files. The cleaner will also clean up trash bins, Photos app, and the Mail app. There’s a safety database that lets you add exceptions to the cleaner. CleanMyMac X will not touch those files or apps. The assistant also does a good job of giving you tips about cleaning files.
CleanMyMac X does a good job of optimizing a Mac. It can help you free up RAM, force quit unresponsive apps and reindex Spotlight. The app can also stop background apps from hogging up your RAM and it also warns you about heavy apps. The optimization features along with the cleanup features can breathe new life into an older Mac. You can also increase boot time by disabling login apps.
This is where the app falters a bit. The Privacy feature works as advertised – it will clear up your browsing history, but it won’t protect you online as a VPN would. Similarly, the malware protection is fine but it’s not as good as standalone malware cleaner apps. If you want an app just to clean up malware, then you may want to look somewhere else.
Well, this is my CleanMyMac X review. If you are looking for an app that will clean up junk files and improve your Mac’s performance, then you should get CleanMyMac X. Sure, the price is more than a lot of other cleaners, but none of them offer these many features or provide comparable performance.
The malware protection is iffy, but this is a file cleaner app and it does that very well. If you have any doubts or suggestions, please let me know in the comments section down below and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
