The Apple Watch has been the king of smartwatches ever since it was first unveiled. It mixed premium look and feel with useful features and a responsive OS. It is a well-made device, but like all devices, it can run into problems. Some users have reported that their Apple Watch won’t turn on anymore. The Apple Watch costs as much as a mid-range smartphone these days and this can be a huge issue for people. I’m here to tell you that you shouldn’t worry since this is a problem that can be solved easily. If your Apple Watch won’t turn on or is unresponsive, then you are reading the right article.
I am going to list out the reasons that can cause this issue. I will also list out some of the solutions you can try out to fix this. Ready? Let’s get started.
Why Won’t Your Apple Watch Turn On?
There can be a lot of factors at play here. The most common factor is an issue with the charger. If the charger or the USB port is damaged or scuffed, then there’s a possibility that it won’t charge the watch anymore. Needless to say, the Apple Watch won’t turn on without charge.
If you are the type of person who likes to tinker with the Watch app, then it’s quite possible that you might have inadvertently enabled a few settings that makes it seem like the watch is unresponsive. Turning off these settings will fix these issues and we will cover them in the next section. Software bugs can also be responsible here and that can also be fixed. If your Watch has physical damage, then there’s nothing you can do except taking it to an Apple-certified service center.
What to Do If Your Apple Watch Won’t Turn On?
I have scoured the Internet for solutions by looking at other reports and I have compiled a list of the best fixes for this problem. Try out the solutions one by one until your Apple Watch turns on again.
1. Make Sure That It Is Charged
From the customer complaints that we’ve seen, the most common culprit is the charger. If it’s damaged or unclean, it won’t charge the Apple Watch and the Watch won’t turn on after running out of juice. Place the Watch on the charger and check if you can see a green lightning bolt. This would mean that the Watch is charging normally. However, if you see a red lightning bolt or no lightning bolt at all, leave it on the charger for 30 minutes and see if it turns on.
What to Do If It Does Not Charge?
- Use the original charger that came with the box if you are using third-party chargers.
- Make sure that the outlet works correctly.
- Check the USB port on the power adapter for debris.
- Clean the magnetic charger.
- Make sure that you have removed the plastic cover from the charger.
- Make sure that the magnetic charger is connected properly to the power outlet.
- Borrow a charger from a friend and see if it still works.
If these methods didn’t work, then it’s not a charger issue. But don’t worry, since we have 3 more fixes for you.
2. Turn off Screen Curtain
Screen Curtain is a feature in all Apple devices which lets you use VoiceOver navigation when the screen is turned off. Screen Curtain is useful if you are in a public place and you don’t want anyone to see what’s on your device. However, if you turned this feature on unknowingly, you might think that your device is unresponsive. Turn this feature off by following these instructions:
- Open the Watch App on your iPhone and tap My Watch.
- Tap Accessibility and then tap VoiceOver.
- Tap on Screen Curtain to disable it.
3. Turn Off Power Reserve
If your Apple Watch only shows you time and seems unresponsive otherwise, then your Watch’s Power Reserve mode is on. This mode saves a ton of battery but it will restrict access to all other apps on the device. This was probably enabled while messing around with the Watch app on the iPhone, but the good news is that it can be easily turned off.
Simply press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo. You may need to charge the watch.
4. Do a Force Restart
Apple only recommends this if your Apple Watch is completely unresponsive, ie; no touch inputs work and the screen won’t turn on. If you have any software glitches, this method will fix that. This is used as a last resort and should not be substituted for a normal restart. To force an Apple Watch, just follow these instructions:
- Press and hold the side button and the Digital crown together.
- Hold them until you see the Apple logo, which will take 10 seconds or more.
If your Apple Watch won’t turn on, that’s all you can do. If these methods don’t work, then you might have to take the Watch to the professionals. Check out our article How to Make Genius Bar Appointment in 2 Minutes for more help.
